New world record of playing damru set in MP’s Ujjain- Bhopal: A new Guinness World Record was created in Madhya Pradesh on Monday under the ‘largest damru ensemble’ category as nearly 1,500 persons played the small power drums on the Mahakaleshwar temple campus in Ujjain, officials said. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav congratulated the people for setting the new world record.
Approximately 1,500 individuals gathered at the temple campus to play the damru simultaneously, setting a new Guinness World Record in the ‘largest damru ensemble’ category. This event was coordinated by the Shree Mahakaleshwar Temple Management Committee and the Culture Department of the MP government. Nischal Barot, a consultant overseeing world record attempts, confirmed that the previous record of 488 participants, set in New York in August 2022, had been surpassed.
Barot mentioned that the exact number of damru players involved in the achievement in Ujjain was still unknown, but it exceeded the previous record. He stated that a new record had been established and recognized by Guinness World Records. CM Yadav congratulated the residents, expressing that the desire to have the city reverberate with the sound of damru had been fulfilled. Ujjain made it into the Guinness Book of World Records by playing Damru during the Bhasma Aarti on the third Monday of Shravan. District Collector Neeraj Kumar Singh stated that over 1,300 individuals played damru at the Mahakaleshwar temple, fulfilling the chief minister’s wish and dedicating the achievement to the deity. Furthermore, participants from various districts, not just Ujjain, took part in this historic event. The previous record, set by 488 NRIs in New York during the “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav,” was surpassed, Singh added.

World record consultant Nischal Barot confirmed that over 1,500 damru players participated, surpassing the previous record of 488 participants set by the Federation of Indian Associations in New York in August 2022. Although the exact number of participants is still pending confirmation, Barot highlighted that it exceeded the previous record. The new record was officially recognized by Guinness World Records, who awarded a certificate to commemorate the achievement. CM Yadav expressed happiness, remarking, ‘The dream of filling the city of Baba Mahakal with the sound of damru has become a reality.’
Yadav mentioned that on the third Monday of Shravan, Ujjain made it into the Guinness Book of World Records by playing Damru to the tune of Bhasma Aarti.
