MS Dhoni’s Career
Dhoni started playing cricket in Ranchi, Bihar (now part of Jharkhand). Born to Pan Singh and Devaki Devi, Dhoni showed athletic skills early as a school goalkeeper. Coach Keshav Ranjan Banerjee noticed Dhoni’s wicketkeeping talent and encouraged him to focus on cricket instead of football. Dhoni became the wicketkeeper for Commando Cricket Club from 1995-1998. He debuted in first-class cricket for Bihar at just eighteen, impressing with a crucial half-century against Assam. Selected for East Zone over Deep Dasgupta in Duleep Trophy final, he displayed talent despite his team’s loss. Dhoni’s wicketkeeping-batting skills were recognized through BCCI’s TRDW program for small-town talents.
Following impressive displays in domestic cricket during the 2003-04 season, Dhoni was chosen to represent the India A squad on their tour of Zimbabwe and Kenya, mainly due to his proficiency in one-day matches. His success with India A led to his inclusion in the national ODI squad for the 2004-05 Bangladesh tour. Despite being dismissed for zero runs on his debut, Dhoni remained a member of the ODI team for the Pakistan series following his underwhelming performance against Bangladesh.
