Morgan Cole Wallen is an American country pop singer. He competed in the sixth season of The Voice, originally as a member of Usher’s team, but later as a member of Adam Levine’s team. After being eliminated in the playoffs of that season, he signed to Panacea Records, releasing his debut EP, Stand Alone, in 2015.

Early life, family and education

Morgan Cole Wallen was born on May 13, 1993, in Sneedville, Tennessee, to Tommy and Lesli Wallen. Tommy was once a local church pastor, and Lesli worked as a teacher. In his teens, the family relocated to Knox County, where he graduated from Gibbs High School. He was a pitcher and shortstop for the school’s baseball team and planned to attend college, but he tore his ulnar collateral ligament his senior year. As a child, Wallen studied piano and violin. He was nurtured with a varied musical repertoire, with his father introducing him to classic rock staples. In his teens, he was drawn to bands like Breaking Benjamin and Nickelback, as well as rappers like Lil Wayne.

Wallen has described his early years as adrift; after high school, he worked in landscaping and was disappointed that he was unable to continue playing baseball. He rekindled his love in music and started learning guitar. He had grown to appreciate country music, particularly musicians such as Keith Whitley and Eric Church, and he fashioned his sound after that tradition.

Career

Wallen took part in season 6 of The Voice, a music competition show, in 2014. He auditioned with Howie Day’s song “Collide”. Judges Shakira and Usher praised his style, and Wallen joined Usher’s squad. He was later picked by Adam Levine’s team after the second round, but was eliminated during the playoffs. Wallen was disheartened by the loss, but reaffirmed his ambition: “Some things in life are beyond your control. Being the best version of yourself isn’t easy. I didn’t feel like I was performing to my full potential. “So I practiced harder.” Nonetheless, The Voice helped raise Wallen’s prominence, and he began to make connections in the music industry.

While in California to participate on The Voice, Wallen began studying with Sergio Sanchez of Atom Smash, the show’s voice coach. Wallen moved to Nashville to advance his career, and he and Sanchez formed a temporary band called Morgan Wallen & Them Shadows. Sanchez introduced Wallen to Bill Ray and Paul Trust from Panacea Records. In 2015, Wallen signed with Panacea Records, where he collaborated with Dominic Frost on guitar, and released the Stand Alone (EP) on August 24, 2015.

Personal life

He had a past relationship with KT Smith, and they were once engaged. They split up supposedly owing to his infidelity, although they had a kid together, Indigo (b. 2020), few months later. He has also been romantically linked to Paige Lorenze, an influencer, and Megan Moroney, a fellow country singer who purportedly wrote her smash hit “Tennessee Orange” about him. In May 2020, Wallen was arrested and charged with public intoxication and disorderly conduct after leaving Kid Rock’s bar in Nashville, Tennessee, and he confessed via Twitter that he and a few friends were “horse-playing with each other” after a couple of bar stops, saying “We didn’t mean any harm, and we want to apologize to any bar staff or anyone that was.
