Plot

An anonymous young man known as Kid makes a living by participating in illegal fights while wearing a monkey mask and adopting the persona of Monkey Man. Flashbacks reveal his time with his mother in the forest, where she shares with him the legend of Hanuman. Kid’s sole mission is to seek vengeance against a group of corrupt individuals accountable for his mother Neela’s death: Rana Singh, the police chief of Yatana, and his mentor and superior Baba Shakti. To get close to them, Kid assumes the identity of Bobby and secures a job at Queenie’s restaurant-club, which caters to affluent clients with drugs and prostitutes. Sita, one of the prostitutes, urges Kid to leave this environment. After gaining access to the VIP section where Rana frequents, Kid attacks him, inflicting a wound before being pursued by the authorities and ultimately shot, plunging into the river.

A child is rescued by Alpha and a group of transgender individuals living in a temple. The child recuperates from his injury there and undergoes training. Flashbacks reveal how, following Baba’s instructions, Rana and the police set fire to Neela’s village to acquire the land; the child also recalls his mother’s brutal murder by Rana. During Diwali, the candidate backed by Shakti wins the election, and they celebrate the triumph of his nationalist party at Queenie’s club. The child infiltrates the club and combats their henchmen with the assistance of Alpha, the group, and Sita. He succeeds in defeating Rana but is fatally wounded by Baba. Despite this, the child manages to eliminate Baba before succumbing to his injuries.

Production

Dev Patel was set to make his directorial debut with the action thriller film “Monkey Man,” which he co-wrote with Paul Angunawela and John Collee. Initially considering Neill Blomkamp as director, Patel ended up directing the film himself. Patel aimed to bring depth and cultural elements to the action genre. Due to the pandemic, filming in India was postponed, leading Patel to choose Batam, Indonesia as the new location. During the filming of the first action scene, Patel suffered a broken hand.

Filming was completed on March 12, 2021, and Netflix acquired worldwide rights to the film for $30 million, likened to “John Wick in Mumbai.” However, Netflix later deemed the film too intense for Indian viewers and explored other options. Patel commented on this decision, stating, “(Netflix) didn’t really understand what they were getting into. The film itself is more intricate and meaningful… it’s not your typical action-packed story from the start.

It aims to offer something more profound.” Jordan Peele, after viewing the film, believed it deserved a theatrical release and joined as a producer under his Monkeypaw Productions label. He convinced Universal Pictures to buy the film from Netflix for less than $10 million; Patel later expressed that Peele “elevated us from obscurity to prominence.” Jed Kurzel was enlisted to create a new musical score for the film, replacing the original composer Volker Bertelmann.

As per a report on The Hindu, Venki Manickam, a Texas-based engineer, who watched the film said that saffron banners in the movie were changed to red. “But the flags are still saffron. That looks exactly like BJP insignia,” he said. Is the politics of the film the reason for the delay in the release? Furthermore, he said, “You can’t claim that this film is Hinduphobic” as Dev Patel assumes the persona of Hanuman in pursuit of revenge.
