Early Life and Career
Mohammed Shami grew up in the village of Sahaspur in Amroha, Uttar Pradesh, as one of five children. His father, Tauseef Ali, was a farmer who had once been a fast bowler in his youth. At the age of 15, Shami was taken to Badruddin Siddique, a cricket coach in Moradabad, located 22 kilometers (14 miles) from his home. Shami worked relentlessly on his bowling technique in Moradabad, often asking for used balls after matches to develop the ability to reverse swing, a skill that would prove crucial in his career. Despite his efforts, he was not selected for the Uttar Pradesh under-19 team. In 2005, Badruddin sent him to Kolkata to improve his chances of being picked for a state team. After playing for Dalhousie Athletic Club, Shami was recommended to Debabrata Das, a former assistant secretary of the Cricket Association of Bengal.

Abuse Allegations
In March 2018, his wife, Hasin Jahan, accused him of having extra-marital affairs and torturing her, both mentally and physically for more than 2 years. Hasin later filed an FIR against Shami at the Jadavpur Police Station in Kolkata based on which police officials registered a case against him and his family. On 23 January 2023, a Kolkata court ordered him to pay a monthly alimony of Rs 1.30 lakh to his estranged wife Hasin Jahan, Rs. 50 thousand as the personal alimony to Hasin Jahan and the remaining Rs 80,000 as the cost of maintenance of their daughter who is staying with her. On 19 September 2023, Shami appeared in Alipore court and applied for bail, which was later granted by the judge.
Trolled for Sajdah
After taking a 5-wicket haul against Sri Lanka in the 2023 ODI World Cup held in India, Shami knelt down on the ground. After the match, many fans criticised Shami for attempting to do sajdah (sajda) while many people from Pakistan and other Islamic countries said that he was fearful of doing sajda in India as it was a country of Hindu majority.
Later, during an interview, Shami said that he was not fearful as India was a free country, and he had full rights to do his religious activities as per his will. |
