Mike Lynch Biography

Mike Lynch, the software millionaire who went missing when his superyacht sank off the coast of Sicily, is one of the few UK entrepreneurs who built a global technology company. That fact has resulted in seemingly obligatory depictions of him as “Britain’s Bill Gates,” yet his tale is vastly different from that of the Microsoft founder. Less than three months ago, the 59-year-old was cleared of 15 counts of fraud he faced in the United States in connection with the $11.1 billion purchase of his firm, Autonomy, by Silicon Valley behemoth Hewlett-Packard in 2011, a case he believed would result in his death in prison due to a lung disease. I had a variety of medical issues that would have made it extremely tough.

Early life and education

Lynch was born in Ireland[2] in 1965 and grew up near Chelmsford, Essex. His mother was a nurse from County Tipperary, and his father was a firefighter from County Cork, Ireland. He was 11 years old when he got a scholarship to Bancroft’s School in Woodford. After that, he attended Christ’s College in Cambridge to study Natural Sciences. After graduating, he pursued a PhD in artificial neural networks (a type of machine learning) under the supervision of Peter Rayner, director of studies in engineering at Christ’s College, and wrote a thesis titled Adaptive techniques in signal processing and connectionist models. He then began a research fellowship in adaptive pattern recognition.

Career

Lynch founded his first company in the late 1980s, while pursuing his PhD. Lynett Systems Ltd was founded with a £2,000 loan arranged in a pub, and it created music-related designs and audio products such as electronic synthesizers and an Atari ST sampler. In 1991, he launched Cambridge Neurodynamics, a company that specialized in computer-based fingerprint identification. Cambridge Neurodynamics spun off three companies: Neurascript, which searched business documents using character recognition and was acquired by the German company Dicom in 2004; NCorp, which searched databases; and Autonomy, which searched unstructured sources such as phone calls, emails, and videos.

Lynch, David Tabizel, and Richard Gaunt formed Autonomy in 1996. Lynch serves as CEO of the search software. In October 2011, Autonomy was sold to Hewlett-Packard for more than $11 billion (£8.6 billion). The deal would eventually result in civil and criminal charges against Lynch and Autonomy’s chief financial officer (CFO), Sushovan Hussain.
