Early Life and Education
Birbiglia was born in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, to Mary Jean (née McKenzie), a nurse, and Vincent Paul Birbiglia, a doctor. He is the youngest of four siblings. Of partial Italian heritage, he was raised Catholic. Birbiglia attended St. John’s High School, an all-boys Catholic school, for one year before graduating from St. Mark’s School in 1996. Inspired by comedian Steven Wright, he began writing jokes at age 16. He went on to study English at Georgetown University, graduating in 2000. In 1997, Mike landed an internship on Late Night with Conan O’Brien, working alongside associate producer Jordan Schlansky. After college, he moved to New York and appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman in 2002. He performed at the Aspen U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in 2003 and self-released his debut comedy album Dog Years in 2004.
