Early Life and Education
Francis grew up in Rumson, New Jersey, as the daughter of Joanne and Ken Iwama, the current chancellor of Indiana University Northwest. She is named after her paternal grandmother and has a diverse heritage, with Japanese roots on her father’s side and Irish and Italian descent on her mother’s side. Reflecting on her childhood in a predominantly white town during the 90s and early 2000s, Francis shared that she faced bullying and was often made to feel “ugly or weird” because of her Asian background. She identifies as Hapa, a term used for individuals of mixed European and Asian or Pacific Islander ancestry.
Francis attended Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School before earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in acting from the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University in 2014. After graduating from Rutgers, Francis landed roles in regional theater, performing as Nina in Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike and as Molly in Peter and the Starcatcher. She won the Best Actress award at the 2016 New York Innovative Theatre Awards and earned a Best Ensemble nomination for her role as Meghan in the Off-Broadway play Connected at 59E59 Theaters. From 2017 to 2018, she was part of the original cast of The Wolves, which earned her ensemble awards at the Obie and Drama Desk Awards.
