Peter Kay was born in Farnworth, Lancashire, and attended Mount Saint Joseph School, where he obtained a GCSE in art. His father, Michael, an engineer, passed away just before Kay’s career began to take off. His mother, Deirdre, is Irish, originally from Coalisland, County Tyrone, and Peter was raised in the Catholic faith. Before becoming a comedian, Kay worked various jobs, including at a toilet roll factory, Netto supermarket, video rental shop, Manchester Arena, and a petrol station.
He was frequently dismissed from these positions for “not taking things seriously,” which later inspired content for That Peter Kay Thing.
