In 1997, he won Channel 4’s So You Think You’re Funny contest and was nominated for a Perrier Award the following year for his show at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Peter Kay was taught metalwork at school by the father of actor Steve Coogan, and like Coogan, he was an altar boy. He proposed to his wife, Susan, on one knee outside Andy’s Records, the spot where they had their first kiss. Before his career in comedy took off, Peter worked in various jobs, including packing toilet rolls in a factory, working in a supermarket, at a video shop, a bingo hall, a cash and carry, as a mobile DJ, and at a garage for six years. In order to get into college, he admitted to lying about having two ‘A’ Levels and five GCSEs, and apparently, no one checked his claims. Peter Kay was born in Farnworth, Lancashire, and attended Mount Saint Joseph School, where he obtained a GCSE in art. His father, Michael, an engineer, passed away just before Kay’s career began to take off. His mother, Deirdre, is Irish, originally from Coalisland, County Tyrone, and Peter was raised in the Catholic faith.
