Retegui was born and raised in Argentina. His maternal grandfather, Angelo Dimarco, emigrated from Canicattì, Sicily to Argentina. Club Career
Mateo Retegui began his senior football journey with Boca Juniors, having previously been signed from River Plate. He was first called up to the Boca first team by manager Guillermo Barros Schelotto during the 2017–18 Argentine Primera División season, though he remained an unused substitute in matches against Arsenal de Sarandí and Estudiantes in December 2017.
