Early life

Retegui was born and raised in Argentina. His maternal grandfather, Angelo Dimarco, emigrated from Canicattì, Sicily to Argentina. On his father’s side, one set of grandparents were Italian, originally from Genoa, while his paternal ancestors trace back to the Basque region, with the surname Retegui originating from Gipuzkoa, Spain. He is the son of Carlos Retegui, a former field hockey player who represented Argentina both as a player and coach in several Pan American and Olympic Games. His sister, Micaela, is also an Olympian in field hockey.

Club Career

Mateo Retegui began his senior football journey with Boca Juniors, having previously been signed from River Plate. He was first called up to the Boca first team by manager Guillermo Barros Schelotto during the 2017–18 Argentine Primera División season, though he remained an unused substitute in matches against Arsenal de Sarandí and Estudiantes in December 2017. He made his professional debut on 17 November 2018, coming on as a late substitute in a 1–0 home victory over Patronato.

In January 2019, Retegui was loaned to Estudiantes on an 18-month deal. During the 2018–19 season, he made eight appearances and followed it up with five goals in 21 matches during the 2019–20 campaign. He later joined Tigre on loan in February 2022, with the deal lasting until the end of 2023.

International Career

Retegui represented Argentina at both U19 and U20 levels, including participation in the 2018 South American Games with the U20 team. Eligible to play for Italy through his ancestry, Retegui was reportedly pre-selected by coach Roberto Mancini in February 2023 for the initial UEFA Euro 2024 qualifiers. He received his first official call-up to the Italian national team on 17 March 2023 and made an immediate impact, scoring on his debut on 23 March in a 2–1 loss to England in Naples. followed that up with another goal on 26 March, scoring the winner in a 2–0 victory over Malta in Ta’ Qali, becoming the first player since Pierino Prati in 1968 to score in his first two competitive matches for Italy.

He scored both goals in a 2–1 win over Venezuela, becoming the first Genoa player to net a brace for Italy since Virgilio Levratto at the 1928 Olympics. In June 2024, Retegui was named in Italy’s squad for UEFA Euro 2024 by manager Luciano Spalletti. Later that year, on 6 September, he was named Player of the Match after assisting and playing a key role in a 3–1 away victory over France in the UEFA Nations League—the Azzurri’s first win in Paris since April 1954.
