Her father is a physician, and her mother is a psychologist. Naturally, there was an underlying expectation that she would follow the same path. College Career
Born in Nashville, Tennessee, Boucek was a four-year starter for the University of Virginia’s women’s basketball team from 1992 to 1996. During her college career, she helped lead the team to four Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) regular season titles and three NCAA Elite Eight appearances. She was named to the GTE Academic All-American team twice and earned All-ACC honors two times. Boucek was recognized as her team’s Defensive Player of the Year on two occasions and finished her career as a member of Virginia’s 1,000-point club.
She also participated in the 1993 U.S. Olympic Festival. After her playing eligibility ended, Boucek was granted a fifth year to complete a series of mini-internships in areas like sports medicine, sports information, and sports psychology. She graduated with honors in 1997, earning a double major in sports medicine and sports management. She was also named the top graduate from the University of Virginia’s Curry School of Education and Human Development.
Professional Playing Career
Although Jenny Boucek initially intended to pursue medical school, news of the WNBA’s launch prompted her to spend a month getting back into playing shape to attend an open tryout for the Cleveland Rockers. In 1997, out of 350 hopefuls, she was one of just two players to earn a roster spot. Boucek made her WNBA debut with the Rockers on June 21, 1997, in a 76–56 loss to the Houston Comets, recording 2 points and 2 rebounds. During the 1997 season, she played in 10 of the team’s 28 games, missing several matchups due to a stress fracture in her back.
In November 1997, Boucek signed with Keflavík in Iceland’s premier women’s basketball league, 1. deild kvenna (now known as Úrvalsdeild kvenna). She played in 18 games across league, playoffs, and cup competitions, helping Keflavík win 16 of those games, along with securing both the Icelandic championship and the Icelandic Basketball Cup. Boucek’s standout performance earned her the Foreign Player of the Year honor, as she averaged 20.7 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 4.4 assists per game.
Coaching Career
Jenny Boucek began her coaching journey in the WNBA in 1999, joining the Washington Mystics as an assistant coach. The following year, she took on the same role with the Miami Sol, where she remained for three seasons. Boucek joined the Seattle Storm’s coaching staff as an assistant and played a key role in the team’s 2004 WNBA Championship win over the Connecticut Sun. Alongside her coaching responsibilities, she also served as a scout for the Storm, evaluating college talent during the NCAA season.
Outside of her WNBA duties, Boucek worked as a color commentator for several ACC women’s basketball games broadcast on Fox Sports Net.
