Early Life and Education

Sheen was born in Dayton, Ohio, on August 3, 1940, to Mary-Ann (née Phelan) and Francisco Estévez Martínez. He suffered an injury during birth that resulted in limited movement in his left arm (Erb’s palsy) and caused it to be three inches shorter than his right. Both of his parents were immigrants; his mother was Irish from County Tipperary, while his father, originally from Galicia, Spain, worked as a factory inspector at the National Cash Register Company after moving to Dayton in the 1930s. Growing up in the South Park neighborhood, he was the seventh of ten children. The family spent time living in Bermuda, where five of his brothers were born, before returning to Dayton, where Martin was the first child born after their return.

As a child, he contracted polio and spent a year bedridden, but he regained the use of his legs thanks to his doctor’s treatment. When he was eleven, Sheen’s mother passed away, leaving the family at risk of separation. However, with help from the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, they remained together. Raised in a Catholic household, he graduated from Chaminade High School (now Chaminade Julienne Catholic High School). At the age of fourteen, he organized a strike among golf caddies at a private club in Dayton, protesting the abusive behavior of some golfers.
