Early Life and Education
Lewis was born at Withington Hospital in Manchester and grew up in the suburb of Didsbury. As a child, he moved with his family to Norley, a village near Delamere Forest in rural Cheshire, where his father became headmaster of Delamere Forest School, a Jewish institution for students with special educational needs. Tragically, Lewis lost his mother, Susan, in a horse riding accident when he was just 11 years old. This experience inspired him to become a patron of the children’s bereavement charity Grief Encounter and to advocate for life insurance.
He attended The King’s School, an independent school in Chester, where he experienced anti-Semitism, being one of only two Jewish boys in his year and receiving the nickname “Jew” from fellow students. Lewis later studied Government and Law at the London School of Economics and pursued a postgraduate degree in Broadcast Journalism at Cardiff University’s Centre for Journalism Studies in 1997. In 2013, he was awarded an honorary doctorate in Business Administration from the University of Chester.
