Mark Kelly Biography- American politician, former astronaut, and United States Navy captain Mark Edward Kelly was born on February 21, 1964. He is a Democratic Party member who has served as Arizona’s junior U.S. senator since 2020. He was elect again to a full term in 2022. Before being chosen to fly the NASA Space Shuttle in 1996, Kelly was a military aviator who had flown combat missions during the Gulf War. Piloting STS-108 on his first space flight in 2001, he went on to pilot STS-121 in 2006, STS-124 in 2008, and STS-134 (the last mission of Space Shuttle Endeavour) in 2011. Assassination attempt against Kelly’s wife, Arizona Representative Gabby Giffords, occurred in January 2011, resulting in her being shot and almost dying. Kelly left the Navy at the end of his service.

Two retired police officers, Richard and Patricia Kelly (née McAvoy), are the parents of Mark Kelly and his identical twin brother, Scott Kelly. Kelly was born in Ireland. In West Orange, New Jersey, he was reared after being born in Orange, New Jersey, on February 21, 1964. Mountain High School awarded Kelly a diploma in 1982. From the United States Merchant Marine Academy, he received the highest honors in 1986 for his Bachelor of Science degree in marine engineering and nautical science. The United States Naval Postgraduate School awarded him an MSc in aeronautical engineering in 1994.
Naval career
Kelly joined the Navy in December 1987 and completed his training aboard the A-6E Intruder attack plane. After that, he was given a job at NAF Atsugi in Kanagawa, Japan, with Attack Squadron 115 (VA-115). The aircraft carrier USS Midway, which was home port at Naval Station Yokosuka in Yokosuka, Japan, made two deployments to the Persian Gulf with VA-115. Kelly complete 39 combat missions throughout the course of Operation Desert Storm. Kelly complete his master’s degree following the Gulf War, and from 1993 to 1994, he was a test pilot for the US Navy. He has more than 5,000 hours of flight time in more than 50 different aircraft and more than 375 carrier landings under his belt as a test pilot and naval aviator.
NASA career
Kelly flew STS-108 on her maiden space mission. On December 5, 2001, Endeavour, the last Shuttle mission of 2001, finally took off after multiple delays.During its visit, STS-108 Endeavour brought more than three tons of supplies, machinery, and a new crew to the orbiting outpost. December 7, the hatches between Endeavour and the International Space Station Destiny Laboratory were open, allowing the ten crew members to say hello to one another. On December 8, the Expedition 3 crew formally left the International Space Station (ISS) after 117 days of service when their specially designe Soyuz seat-liners were moved to Endeavour for the journey back to Earth. The official crew swap took place when the Expedition 4 seat-liners were move to the Soyuz return vehicle that was affixed to the station.
