A member of the Labour and Co-operative parties, she has represented Manchester Central as a Member of Parliament (MP) since 2012.Before her election, Powell worked in various campaigning and public relations roles for organizations such as Britain in Europe, NESTA, and the Labour Party. She held the position of shadow Cabinet Office minister and was vice-chair for the Labour Party’s 2015 general election campaign. In September 2015, she was appointed Shadow Secretary of State for Education but resigned in June 2016. From April 2020 to May 2021, she served as Shadow Minister for Business and Consumers, and from May to November 2021, she was the Shadow Secretary of State for Housing.
