Early Life

Levi Rabbetts was born on May 17, 1968, at West Middlesex Hospital in Isleworth, London. He is of Romani descent and was raised in a Southwest London council estate. His father, Joseph Bellfield, passed away from leukemia when Levi was just 10 years old. He grew up with four siblings: two brothers, Joelion and Harry, and two sisters, Josephine and Maxine. Bellfield attended Forge Lane Junior School, followed by Rectory Secondary School and Feltham Comprehensive.

Over the years, Bellfield has fathered 11 children with five different women, with the three youngest children coming from his most recent girlfriend, Emma Mills. In May 2022, the Ministry of Justice confirmed that he was engaged and had applied to marry a woman who had begun writing to him two years earlier and became a regular visitor. Any marriage would require the approval of the governor at HM Prison Frankland. In June 2023, it was reported that Bellfield converted to Islam and adopted the name Yusuf Rahim.

Working Life

During his 2008 trial for the murders of McDonnell and Delagrange, Bellfield claimed he had spent his life in the Hounslow, Hanworth, and Feltham areas of southwest London. He worked as a bouncer in various bars and nightclubs until 2002, after which he became a wheel-clamper. However, he also stalked the streets, targeting lone women near bus stops.

Personality

Detective Chief Inspector Sutton noted that Bellfield initially presented himself as charming and friendly but quickly revealed a violent and manipulative side. Ex-girlfriends described a pattern of behavior where he was loving at first but then became controlling and abusive. One girlfriend recounted an incident where, after an argument, he forced her to sit on a stool in the kitchen all night. Detective Sergeant Jo Brunt shared that some women had to seek refuge in shelters to escape Bellfield’s control.

Attacks

While under police surveillance, Bellfield was seen driving his van and approaching girls at bus stops. He consistently denied any involvement in the attacks, and investigators speculated on his motives. In a video from 2005, Bellfield’s demeanor during questioning was disconcerting, as he repeatedly answered “no comment” in a high-pitched voice, seemingly at odds with his violent actions. Detective Chief Inspector Sutton theorized that Bellfield harbored a massive ego, perceiving rejection as a slight that warranted extreme violence. Authorities suspect he may be responsible for additional attacks beyond the four for which he has been convicted.
