Early life
Chesney was reared in Luttrell after being born in Knoxville, Tennessee, on March 26, 1968, at St. Mary’s Medical Center. He is of Irish and English ancestry. He is the son of Knoxville-based hair stylist Karen Chandler and former elementary school teacher David Chesney. Jennifer Chandler, Chesney’s younger sister, is her only sibling. Chesney played football and baseball at Gibbs High School, where he graduated in 1986. He started teaching himself how to play the guitar after receiving his first instrument for Christmas.
Chesney attended East Tennessee State University in Johnson City to study advertising. He graduated in 1990 and was involved in the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity and the ETSU Bluegrass Program. Good Old Boy At Heart, a self-released demo album, was recorded by him at Bristol, Virginia’s Classic Recording Studio in 1989. While playing at the local Johnson City clubs, he sold 1,000 copies of the CD, using the proceeds to help finance the purchase of a new guitar for himself.

In 1992, Troy Tomlinson at Opryland Music Group was introduced to Chesney by Clay Bradley, the chief of writer relations at BMI. During his Tomlinson audition, Chesney sang five songs. After the audition, Chesney was given a contract as a songwriter. One year later, he landed a deal with Capricorn Records, who had just launched a country branch, thanks to an appearance at a songwriter’s showcase. In My Wildest Dreams, Chesney’s debut album, was published in April 1994 by indie Capricorn Records label. “Whatever It Takes” and “The Tin Man,” the album’s first two singles, both peaked in the lower reaches of the US Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks list. Before Capricorn Records liquidated its country music operation in Nashville later that year, the record sold about 10,000 copies.

Personal life
Chesney tried to mount a police horse in Buffalo, New York, in 2000, which led to him and Tim McGraw getting into a fight with the authorities. Surrounding police officers thought the horse was being stolen, but McGraw came to Chesney’s rescue. In 2001, both Chesney and McGraw were found not guilty after being detained and charged with disorderly conduct and assault, respectively.
