Early Life and Career
Bruce was born and raised in Glasgow, where he attended Hutchesons’ Boys’ Grammar School. Initially, he trained and worked as a chartered accountant before taking a job washing cars, which led him to begin his broadcasting career with the Hospital Broadcasting Service in Glasgow in the early 1970s.
In 1977, he became a staff announcer for BBC Radio 4 Scotland and a TV continuity announcer for BBC One Scotland and BBC Two Scotland. When BBC Radio Scotland launched in November 1978, he was one of the original presenters of Nightbeat, alongside Iain Purdon, later joined by Charles Nove. Bruce also hosted a Saturday morning show. In 1980, he moved to the mid-morning slot and, by 1983, he was presenting a daily afternoon entertainment program. Additionally, he hosted a mid-morning show on the BBC World Service in the late 1980s.
