Bates was the youngest of three daughters in Memphis. Her father, Langdon Doyle Bates, was a mechanical engineer, and her mother, Bertye Kathleen (née Talbert), was a homemaker. Bates graduated early from White Station High School in 1965 and earned her degree in theater from Southern Methodist University in 1969, where she was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority. In 1970, she moved to New York City to pursue acting and is also an alumna of the William Esper Studio for the performing arts.
