Career
Drs. Feng Chen and C. Neal Stewart co-advised Yuan’s PhD thesis, which focused on terpenes, which are secondary metabolites found in plants. Even while pursuing his PhD, he shown a keen interest in research and created a collection of widely used statistical techniques for QPCR analysis. Yuan received funding from the SunGrant Fellowship to train in biomass processing and characterisation at the University of Tennessee and the National Renewable Energy Lab after earning his PhD. From 2008 to 2013, Yuan worked as an assistant professor at Texas A&M University. He started creating new technologies for sustainability, renewable materials, and fuels in this capacity.
He oversaw a group of scientists and engineers in 2012 that created artificial organelles and new pathways to convert carbon from photosynthesis into the terpene product squalene. Subsequently, SynShark LLC licensed and commercialized the innovations. Later on, he carried on creating blue algae, or cyanobacteria, to yield limonene, another terpene. Eventually, the experiment produced an algal variety that can self-sediment, enabling the harvesting at a minimal cost. By fusing artificial intelligence with this harvesting method, he was able to produce algae as a consistent, cost-effective source of biofuel and bioproducts, setting a new world record.
