Early life
On May 17, 1973, Joshua Michael Homme was born in Palm Springs, California. He was raised in the Palm Desert, California, area in a well-known family; his paternal grandpa, Clancy “Cap” Homme, was an early immigrant to the Valley, having come from North Dakota. There is a park dedicated for Cap in a gated community in the Valley, and a private street in Rancho Mirage that once served as the Homme ranch’s original route is also named in his honor. It is thought that the Homme surname is Norwegian. Because of his father’s job, Homme and his family moved frequently, living in several locations throughout the Valley. Later on in the interview, he talked about how he had to “make his own fun” while growing up in the desert. He said he didn’t start playing music to “get girls or make money,” and he thought he would become a contractor like his father.

Career
At Palm Desert High School, Homme, then 14 years old, established the punk rock-influenced heavy metal band Katzenjammer in 1987 alongside classmates John Garcia, Brant Bjork, Nick Oliveri, and Chris Cockrell. Homme played guitar for the group. They went through several name changes before shortening it to Kyuss, after releasing an EP under that moniker. Originally, they were called Sons of Kyuss. By the early 1990s, the band had developed a cult following; to perform, they would frequently drive for hours to remote desert areas and plug into generators. “Generator parties” were the term given to these gatherings, which became legendary in the music community. The group gained notoriety for their backstage brawls with local LA celebrities but also for their hard, groove-oriented, downtuned music.
This quickly caught the interest of Chris Goss, who ended up mentoring the band, helping them get signed to a label, and finally producing them only to maintain their style. Since Homme was under 18 when the band signed their contract, his parents did it on his behalf. The last three Kyuss-produced albums, Wretch, Blues for the Red Sun, Welcome to Sky Valley, and…And the Circus Leaves Town, are frequently recognized as seminal works in the evolution of the stoner rock subgenre during the 1990s.

When Homme was 23 years old and Brody Dalle was 17, they met at Lolllapalooza in 1996. Homme was there to perform with Screaming Trees, while she was there to see her then-boyfriend Tim Armstrong’s band Rancid. When they got back in touch in 2003, after she had separated from Armstrong, they had been dating for seven years. Homme reported that fans of Armstrong and Rancid had sent him several death threats. On December 3, 2005, the two got married.
