Early Life and Education
Born in New York City, Peele is the son of Lucinda Williams, a white woman from Maryland, and Hayward Peele, Jr., an African American man from North Carolina who passed away in 1999. Raised by his single mother on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, Peele was passionate about cinema from a young age, deciding at 12 to pursue a career as a film director. Influenced by films such as Glory, Edward Scissorhands, Thelma & Louise, and Aliens, he developed a strong desire to create films.
He attended the Computer School in Manhattan, graduated from The Calhoun School in 1997 after receiving a scholarship, and then enrolled at Sarah Lawrence College, where he majored in puppetry. After two years, he left college to form a comedy duo with classmate Rebecca Drysdale, who later contributed to Key & Peele.
