Early Life
Jon Jones was born on July 19, 1987, in Rochester, New York. His father, Arthur, is a pastor at Mount Sinai Church of God in Christ in Binghamton, New York, and initially discouraged Jon from pursuing a career in fighting. Arthur wanted Jon to follow in his footsteps and become a preacher, advising him to explore other paths. Jon’s mother, Camille, sadly passed away in 2017 at the age of 55 after battling diabetes for many years.
Jon is one of four children. His older brother, Arthur, played defensive line for the Baltimore Ravens, Indianapolis Colts, and Washington Redskins, while his younger brother, Chandler, was an outside linebacker for the Las Vegas Raiders. Tragically, Jon’s older sister, Carmen, passed away from a brain tumor before reaching her 18th birthday.
Mixed Martial Arts Career
Before pursuing MMA, Jon was a standout wrestler and state champion at Union-Endicott High School in Endicott, New York. He also played football as a defensive lineman, and his slight frame earned him the nickname “Bones” from his coach. Jon went on to win an NJCAA wrestling national championship at Iowa Central Community College. After transferring to Morrisville State College to study Criminal Justice, Jon dropped out of college to focus on his MMA career.
Jones made his professional MMA debut in April 2008, quickly rising to prominence with an undefeated 6–0 record over just three months, finishing all of his opponents. In his final fight before joining the UFC, Jones defeated Moyses Gabin at BCX 5 to win the USKBA Light Heavyweight Championship, securing a TKO victory in the second round.
