Early life and education
Hamm was born on March 10, 1971, in St. Louis, Missouri, as the son of Deborah (née Garner) Hamm, a secretary, and Daniel Hamm, who ran a family trucking business. He is of German, French, English, and Irish ancestry; his surname is derived from German immigrants. He was reared Catholic. When Hamm was two years old, his parents split, and he moved to the St. Louis suburb of Creve Coeur with his mother, who died of colon cancer when he was ten. Hamm then lived with his father and grandmother in nearby Normandy until his father died ten years after his mother, thereby making him an orphan at the age of twenty.
His first acting role was as Winnie-the-Pooh in first grade. At 16, he was cast as Judas in the play Godspell and enjoyed the experience, despite the fact that he did not take acting seriously. He attended John Burroughs School, a private school in Ladue, where he played football, baseball, and swimming. During this period, he dated Sarah Clarke, who later became an actress.
