John Turturro was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Katherine Florence (Incerella) and Nicholas Turturro. His mother, of Sicilian descent, was an amateur jazz singer and worked in a naval yard during World War II. His father, originally from Giovinazzo, Italy, emigrated to the U.S. at age six and worked as a carpenter and construction worker before joining the U.S. Navy. Turturro’s mother experienced hardship early in life, including the tragic loss of her mother to a botched home abortion.
Raised Catholic, Turturro moved to Rosedale, Queens, with his family at age six. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in theater studies from the State University of New York at New Paltz in 1979 and later earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Yale School of Drama in 1983.
