Early Life
Joaquin Phoenix was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, at the Hospital Metropolitano San Francisco to John Lee Bottom, a landscape gardening company founder, and Arlyn “Heart” Bottom (née Dunetz), an executive secretary at NBC. His mother’s connections helped the family secure acting opportunities. Phoenix is the third of five siblings, following River (1970–1993) and Rain (born 1972), and preceding Liberty (born 1976) and Summer (born 1978), all of whom have pursued acting careers. He also has a paternal half-sister, Jodean (born 1964).
His father, of English, German, and French descent, was raised Catholic, while his mother was of Ashkenazi Jewish heritage, with Russian and Hungarian roots. The couple met when Arlyn was hitchhiking in California and married shortly thereafter. After the birth of their second child, the family joined the religious cult Children of God, traveling throughout South America and the Caribbean as missionaries. They eventually became disillusioned with the cult’s practices, particularly “flirty fishing,” and left in 1977.
