Her grandfather, Alberto Baez, transitioned from the Catholic Church to become a Methodist minister and moved to the U.S. when her father was two years old. Her father, Albert Baez (1912–2007), originally from Puebla, Mexico, grew up in Brooklyn, where his father served a Spanish-speaking congregation. Albert initially considered a career in ministry but pursued mathematics and physics, earning a PhD from Stanford University in 1950.

He is credited as a co-inventor of the X-ray microscope. Joan’s cousin, John C. Baez, is a noted mathematical physicist. Her mother, Joan Chandos Baez (née Bridge), known as “Big Joan,” was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, and was the second daughter of an English Anglican priest who claimed descent from the Dukes of Chandos. She was born on April 11, 1913, and passed away on April 20, 2013.
