Jennifer Grey was born in New York City to actress/singer Jo Wilder and Academy Award-winning actor Joel Grey. Her paternal grandfather was comedian and musician Mickey Katz, and both of her parents hailed from Jewish backgrounds. Grey attended the Dalton School in Manhattan, where she studied dance and acting and met her best friend, actress Tracy Pollan. After graduating in 1978, she trained for two years at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre in Manhattan. To support herself while waiting for acting roles, she worked as a waitress.

Career

Grey began her career at 19, booking a Dr. Pepper commercial, and made her film debut in Reckless (1984). That same year, she appeared in Red Dawn, The Cotton Club, and a special episode of ABC Afterschool Special. Her breakout came in 1986 when she co-starred with Matthew Broderick in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. In 1987, she starred in Dirty Dancing, which became a major hit, grossing $214.6 million on a $4.5 million budget. Her performance earned her a Golden Globe nomination. Following Dirty Dancing, Grey voiced a character in the French animated film Gandahar (1988) and appeared in various films and TV movies, including Bloodhounds of Broadway (1989), If the Shoe Fits (1990), and Murder in Mississippi (1990).

Personal Life

In 1987, Grey was involved in a tragic car accident in Northern Ireland while a passenger with then-boyfriend Matthew Broderick, resulting in the deaths of two people. This incident caused her significant emotional distress and survivor’s guilt, overshadowing her subsequent success with Dirty Dancing. Jennifer has dated several notable figures, including Michael J. Fox and Johnny Depp. She married actor Clark Gregg on July 21, 2001, and they welcomed a daughter, Stella, on December 3, 2001. The couple amicably separated in January 2020, and their divorce was finalized in February 2021.
