Early life
Jamelia was born in Handsworth, Birmingham, to Paulette Davis, a single mother. Her parents are both Jamaican; her father is from Spanish Town, and her mother is from Westmoreland. She grew up in nearby Hockley, where she attended Brookfields Primary School before moving on to CTC Kingshurst Academy, then known as City Technology College.
Career
Jamelia was signed to Capitol Records at the age of 15 when producers heard recordings of her self-written a cappella songs on a karaoke machine. Jamelia collaborated with fellow R&B artist Rosita Lynch to record the single “So High” in late 1999. The single failed to chart in the United Kingdom and continental Europe, and it did not appear on any of Jamelia’s future releases. Following the single’s dismal sales, Jamelia departed Capitol Records and was promptly signed by Parlophone, an EMI subsidiary. After taking some time to create her debut studio album, Drama (2000), Jamelia returned to the music world in 1999 with the single “I Do”, which became her first commercially successful single in the UK.
However, the single’s dismal chart success caused Money’s release to be delayed. Jamelia released her third song, “Money” (with dancehall musician Beenie Man and co-written by UK The X Factor finalist Daniel De Bourg), in February 2000. The single marked the singer’s breakthrough in the UK, reaching at number five and staying nine weeks in the UK Top 75; it later earned a MOBO Award for Best Video in 2000. Despite Money’s success, Drama only peaked at number 39 in the UK charts. The album’s third single, “Call Me,” peaked at number 11, while the fourth, “Boy Next Door,” peaked at number 42.

Her first child was born in 2001 as a result of a relationship with music manager Terry Wallen, whom Jamelia describes as abusive and who inspired her song “Thank You”. Jamelia ended her relationship with boyfriend Darren Byfield in August 2007, and the couple had a daughter (born October 21, 2005). They reunited a few months later, and in October 2007, they announced their engagement. On June 15, 2008, it was announced that the pair married the day before in West Sussex. On November 3, 2009, it was announced that they would file for divorce.
