Weaving was born on April 4, 1960, at the University of Ibadan Teaching Hospital in Ibadan, Nigeria, to English parents. His mother, Anne Lennard, a former teacher and tour guide, and his father, Wallace Weaving, a seismologist, met while studying at the University of Bristol. His maternal grandmother was Belgian. When he was just a year old, his family moved back to the United Kingdom, where they lived in Bedford and Brighton before relocating to Australia, Johannesburg in South Africa, and then returning to the UK once more.
In the UK, Weaving attended The Downs School in Wraxall, near Bristol, and Queen Elizabeth’s Hospital. During his time at The Downs School, he played Captain Asquith in Robert Bolt’s The Thwarting of Baron Bolligrew in 1973, marking one of his first theatrical roles. The family returned to Australia in 1976, where Weaving completed his education at Knox Grammar School in Sydney. He graduated from Sydney’s National Institute of Dramatic Art in 1981.
