Holly Johnson Biography 2024

William ‘Holly’ Johnson’s pop career can be viewed as a sequence of before and after moments. Before and after Relax… B&A Pleasure Dome… B&A Frankie. B&A Blast. B&A sickness. B&A is a legal case. B&A biography. The timeframe has been summed up to maximize the total; a sequence of theatrical activities that work together to create the larger picture at the heart of the artist. Or ‘The Bigger Bang’, as it was once proposed. Despite this, there have been distinct recurring patterns. In an odd twist on the hedonistic pop story, Holly’s relationship with his manager and boyfriend Wolfgang Kuhle has remained unbroken for nearly three decades. His ability to provide a working-class retreat through lyricism and comedy continues to impress.

Early life

Johnson was born on February 9, 1960, in Liverpool, England, to Eric and Pat (née McGlouchlin) Johnson. His paternal grandfather, Patrick, was Irish, while his maternal grandfather, Patrick McGlouchlin, was 3/4 Indian. Johnson was the third of four children and was given the nickname Billy as a child. He attended St Mary’s Church of England Primary School in Liverpool before moving on to Liverpool Collegiate School in Everton when he was eleven years old. Johnson changed his name to Holly when he was fourteen, after being influenced by actress Holly Woodlawn, an Andy Warhol acquaintance. Johnson and a companion were mocked and dubbed “Jolly Johnson” and “Honey Heath” during their sophomore year at Liverpool Collegiate. Marc Bolan and David Bowie were two artists who they both admired.

Johnson was an active member of Liverpool Collegiate’s late 1970s punk rock/new wave scene. Johnson played bass for the local band Big in Japan and released two solo singles on Eric’s label. Both “Yankee Rose” and “Hobo Joe” failed to chart. Johnson first met his partner, Wolfgang Kuhle, in the early 1980s.
