Kojima was born on August 24, 1963, in Setagaya, Tokyo, as the youngest of three children. His father, Kingo, was a pharmacist who traveled frequently for work and named Kojima after a common name he encountered among doctors. When Kojima was four, the family moved to Osaka. Reflecting on this period, Kojima described it as a sudden change in environment, and he spent much of his time indoors, either watching television or making figurines. While living in Osaka, his family adopted the tradition of watching a film together each night, and Kojima was not allowed to go to bed until the movie ended.
They enjoyed a wide variety of films, including European cinema, westerns, and horror, with no restrictions on what he could watch. Kojima developed an interest in filmmaking when a friend brought a Super 8 camera to school, and they began making films, charging their classmates 50 yen to watch them. In a playful move, Kojima convinced his parents to fund a trip to an island off the coast of Japan, without revealing that his plan was to film there.
