Early Life
Born in Frankfurt, West Germany, Zimmer spent his early years in Königstein-Falkenstein, where he played the piano at home but only had brief formal lessons, as he found them too restrictive. In a Reddit AMA, he noted, “My formal training was two weeks of piano lessons. I was thrown out of eight schools. But I joined a band. I am self-taught.” He attended the Ecole d’Humanité, an international boarding school in Switzerland. As a teenager, Zimmer moved to London and studied at Hurtwood House. He was heavily influenced by Ennio Morricone’s film scores, particularly citing Once Upon a Time in the West as a key inspiration for his career choice.
In a speech at the 1999 Berlin Film Festival, Zimmer shared that he is Jewish and recounted his mother’s escape from Germany to England during World War II. He later reflected on the challenges of growing up Jewish in post-War Germany, expressing that his parents were cautious about disclosing their heritage. He described his mother as very musical and his father as an engineer, saying he grew up experimenting with modifying instruments, which elicited mixed reactions from his parents.
