Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3: As the story progressed, the submersible gained a lot of attention on social media and became the target of “public schadenfreude”. This led to the creation of darkly humorous Internet memes, such as interactive video game recreations and image macros that made fun of the submersible’s poor construction, OceanGate’s alleged lackluster safety record, and the people who perished. Memes have been deemed disrespectful by many, including David Pogue, who called them “inappropriate and a little bit sick”. Some have speculated that the unfavorable attitude to the victims could be a reaction to earlier news reports about other billionaire-led missions, frequently with their own businesses, including Blue Origin. The Washington Post’s Molly Roberts said that people making jokes about the incident were displaying the sardonic, provocative, and aggressive tendencies of Internet users toward one another.

Plot
Adam Warlock, a Sovereign warrior created by High Priestess Ayesha, attacks the Guardians of the Galaxy at their new headquarters on Knowhere with the intention of destroying them for robbing her.[a] Nebula stabs Adam and makes off after seriously hurting Rocket. Due to a kill switch implanted in him by the company Orgocorp, Rocket’s wounds cannot be healed by the Guardians’ med-packs. In order to recover the override code for the switch and preserve Rocket’s life, the Guardians journey to Orgocorp’s headquarters.
Rocket remembers his history while he remains comatose. The leader of Orgocorp, the High Evolutionary, experimented on him after finding him as a newborn raccoon. His goal was to improve and anthropomorphize animal lifeforms, or Humanimals, in order to construct the utopian civilization known as Counter-Earth. Among the test subjects in Batch 89 that Rocket made friends with were the walrus Teefs, the rabbit Floor, and the otter Lylla. Rocket’s increasing intelligence impressed the High Evolutionary, who used his knowledge to correct a bug in subsequent Humanimal batches. But before destroying Batch 89, he grew jealous of Rocket’s intelligence and intended to harvest his mind for additional study. When Rocket tried to liberate his buddies, Lylla was slain by the High Evolutionary, who also made fun of Rocket for expressing sorrow over her passing.

The half-human, half-Celestial leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy who was abducted from Earth as a child and raised by a group of alien thieves and smugglers, the Ravagers. In the film, Quill is in a “state of depression” following the appearance of a variant of his dead lover Gamora, who does not share the same affection for Quill as her older version had for him, which in turn affects his leadership of the Guardians.
Zoe Saldaña as Gamora
An orphan who seeks redemption for her past crimes, and was adopted and trained by Thanos to be his personal assassin. The original version of Gamora, a member of the Guardians, was killed by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War (2018), and an alternate version of the character traveled to the present in Avengers: Endgame (2019); Saldaña reprises the latter role in this film, now serving as a member of the Ravagers. Saldaña stated that Vol. 3 would be the final time she would portray Gamora, noting that she originally signed to play her in one film and ended up playing the role for much longer, a role she was grateful to play due to the impact it especially had on female fans.
Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer
A member of the Guardians and a highly skilled warrior whose family was slaughtered by Ronan the Accuser, under the instructions of Thanos. Bautista stated that Vol. 3 would be the final time he would portray Drax, having been grateful for the role, while still calling it a “relief” to have concluded his time with the character, given the long hours needed to get into makeup and hoping to pursue more dramatic acting roles. Because of Bautista’s decision, Gunn opted not to include Drax in the post-credits scene.
Karen Gillan as Nebula
A member of the Guardians, a former Avenger, and Gamora’s adoptive sister who, similarly to her, was trained by their adoptive father Thanos to be his personal assassin. Gillan believed Nebula was developing into a “slightly different person” with more levity as she starts to heal psychologically following the death of Thanos, who was the source of her abuse and torment.Vol. 3 fulfills a character arc for the character writer and director James Gunn envisioned when starting work on Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), going from a minor villain to a member of the Guardians. Although the film teases a possible romance between Star-Lord and Nebula, Gunn denies having ever considered the two becoming a couple, though Gillan does believe she harbors a small crush on Quill.

Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) In November 2014, writer and director James Gunn revealed that when he was working on the first movie, he had ideas for a potential third movie in addition to the “basic story” for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017). In June 2015, he expressed uncertainty about his involvement in a third Guardians movie, stating that his decision will be based on his feelings following the completion of Vol. 2. Producer of the Guardians movies Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, announced in April 2016 that a third Guardians movie would be coming in “2020 and beyond” as part of the MCU. Gunn declared in March 2017 that a third movie was “definitely” coming.
In April 2017, Gunn revealed that he would be helming and writing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The movie, according to him, would “conclude the story of this iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and help catapult both old and new Marvel characters into the next ten years and beyond.” It will take place after Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019). The third Guardians movie, he said, would “tie a lot of stuff together” from the previous two and provide “a lot of answers on a lot of different things.” The three movies would “work together as a whole,” telling one story. In addition, Gunn intended to collaborate with Marvel on the “Marvel Cosmic Universe”‘s future.
Music
Gunn thought in April 2017 that the soundtrack to the movie would sound different from Awesome Mix Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, the soundtracks to the previous two movies. The following month, he said that the greater variety of music available for the narrative had him “panicking” over the soundtrack and forcing him to make some “pretty specific choices” quickly. Early in July 2017, Gunn whittled his list of possible songs down to 181, though he acknowledged that it might expand once more. The next month, all of the songs for the movie had been chosen; Gunn mentioned that the soundtrack was, but the songs themselves are not contemporary, taken from Quill’s Zune that he got at the conclusion of Vol. 2.
Marketing
During the Marvel Studios panel at San Diego Comic-Con in 2022, the movie was spoken about and the initial footage was shown. It was also revealed that Iwuji would be portraying the High Evolutionary, who would dress up and attend the panel. According to Gunn, the reason the video was not made available to the general public was that the visual effects were insufficient for “repeated views and close inspection”. A formal trailer was unveiled at the CCXP on December 1, 2022. Spacehog’s “In the Meantime” was included. TheWrap’s Drew Taylor praised the teaser as amazing, exhilarating, and poignant, noting “an undercurrent of extreme melancholy” and “Gunn’s patented, rollicking ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ tone is very much in place.” Variety’s Carson Burton surmised that the movie will be “shaping” based on the trailer.
Release
On April 19, 2023, Dongdaemun Design Plaza hosted an early showing of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. April 22, 2023 saw the film’s debut in Disneyland Paris, while April 27, Hollywood, Los Angeles, saw its North American premiere at the Dolby Theatre. The movie opened on May 3, 2023, in the United Kingdom and May 5, in the United States, among other nations. Prior to being withdrawn from release on May 1, 2020, it was scheduled for that day. It is included in the MCU’s Phase Five. It was made available in Dolby Cinema, 3D, IMAX, 4DX, and ScreenX formats. Reception
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 brought in $845.6 million globally after grossing $358.9 million in the US and Canada and $486.6 million in other markets. Last Day Hollywood estimated that after deducting all costs and receipts, the movie will have a net profit of $124 million. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was expected to make about $110 million its first weekend at 4,450 screens in the US and Canada. On its opening day, the movie brought in $48.2 million, with $17.5 million coming from Thursday night previews. It went on to become the box office leader with a debut of $118.4 million.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 took the top spot at the box office in its second weekend, earning $62 million—a 48% decrease. In its first weekend, the movie brought in $168.1 million from markets outside of the US and Canada. The movie took in $92 million in its second weekend of release, a 40% decrease from its first weekend’s total. China ($77.4 million), the United Kingdom ($36 million), Mexico ($30.8 million), South Korea ($26.7 million), and France ($24.3 million) were the top grossing territories as of May 27, 2023.
