Early Life
Grigor Dimitrov was born in Haskovo, Bulgaria, to Dimitar Dimitrov, a tennis coach, and Maria Dimitrova, a sports teacher and former volleyball player. He was introduced to tennis at the age of three, when his mother gave him his first racket. By the time he was five, Dimitrov was playing tennis daily. Initially, his father coached him, but as he demonstrated his talent in junior tournaments, it became clear that he needed further development under different conditions. At 16, Dimitrov turned professional. In 2007, Dimitrov joined the Sánchez-Casal Academy, where he trained under Emilio Sánchez and Pato Álvarez. In March 2009, he moved to Paris, France, to train at Patrick Mouratoglou’s tennis academy, where he spent the next four years. Dimitrov appointed Mouratoglou as his coach in 2012.

Dimitrov began dating Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova in late 2012, and they publicly confirmed their relationship after Dimitrov’s first win against world No. 1 Novak Djokovic at the 2013 Madrid Open. However, they separated in July 2015. Afterward, Dimitrov had a brief relationship with American singer Nicole Scherzinger, lead vocalist of The Pussycat Dolls, which ended in 2019. He has since been linked to businesswoman Lolita Osmanova, president of Luxury International magazine, and Romanian actress Mădălina Ghenea. In addition to his native Bulgarian, Dimitrov speaks English. His main interests include sports, cars, computers, and watches. Early in his career, he earned the nickname “Baby Fed” due to his elegant playing style and similarities to Roger Federer.
