Early Life
Monfils was born and raised in Paris. His father, Rufin Monfils, hails from Guadeloupe and was a former professional football player and a France Telecom employee. His mother, Sylvette Cartesse, is from Martinique and worked as a nurse.
Junior Career
Monfils began playing junior tennis in January 2002 at age 15 in a Grade 4 tournament in Sweden. By 2004, he had compiled an 83–22 win-loss record and reached the No. 1 junior combined world ranking. During that year, he won the boys’ singles titles at the Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon, and was crowned the International Tennis Federation youth world champion. His streak of junior Grand Slam wins was halted at the US Open when he lost in the third round to Viktor Troicki. In 2002, Monfils finished as runner-up at the Dutch Junior Open and won the German Junior Open. By the end of the year, he was rank as the world’s No. 4 junior player and also represent France in the Junior Davis Cup.
