VanVleet guided the Knights to a third-place finish in the IHSA state tournament.
Despite receiving offers from higher-profile teams in Chicago, VanVleet chose to stay loyal to his local Rockford Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) team, believing it wouldn’t hinder his recruiting prospects. He felt that if he could lead his team to success, scouts would take notice. VanVleet received scholarship offers from several schools, including Colorado State, Northern Illinois, Wichita State, Southern Illinois, Drake, Detroit, and Kent State. His stepfather believed that VanVleet was being overlooked by Chicago-area schools due to his decision to stay with the Rockford AAU team. VanVleet ultimately narrowed his options to Kent State, Northern Illinois, and Wichita State, eventually choosing to play for Wichita State. By doing so, he became the only member of the 2012 Rivals.com top 150 class to commit to a Missouri Valley Conference school.
