Fredderick Edmund VanVleet Sr. born February 25, 1994 is an American professional basketball player for the Houston Rockets of the National Basketball Association (NBA). A point guard, VanVleet played college basketball at Wichita State University, where he helped revitalize the school’s basketball program. During his time at Wichita State, VanVleet contributed to the team’s impressive achievements, including a Final Four appearance in the 2012–13 season and an undefeated regular season for the 2013–14 team. In 2014, he was named a 2014 NCAA Men’s Basketball All-American by multiple media outlets. As a junior in 2014–15, VanVleet earned All-Missouri Valley Conference first team honors and was recognized with an All-American honorable mention by the Associated Press. He became the career assists leader for Wichita State and was named the Missouri Valley Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Year in both his sophomore and senior years.

VanVleet became a vital player for the Raptors and was part of the team that won the NBA Championship in 2019. He holds the Raptors’ records for single-game assists (20) and single-game points (54), making him the only player in franchise history to hold both records. His 54 points also set the NBA single-game record for undrafted players. In 2022, VanVleet was selected to his first NBA All-Star Game.

VanVleet played for Auburn High School in Rockford, Illinois, where he was named an All-State first-team selection by the Chicago Sun-Times, Associated Press, and Chicago Tribune as a senior in 2012. That year, he helped lead Auburn to a 22-game winning streak, resulting in the school’s first Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Final Four appearance since 1975. VanVleet guided the Knights to a third-place finish in the IHSA state tournament.
Despite receiving offers from higher-profile teams in Chicago, VanVleet chose to stay loyal to his local Rockford Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) team, believing it wouldn’t hinder his recruiting prospects. He felt that if he could lead his team to success, scouts would take notice. VanVleet received scholarship offers from several schools, including Colorado State, Northern Illinois, Wichita State, Southern Illinois, Drake, Detroit, and Kent State. His stepfather believed that VanVleet was being overlooked by Chicago-area schools due to his decision to stay with the Rockford AAU team. VanVleet ultimately narrowed his options to Kent State, Northern Illinois, and Wichita State, eventually choosing to play for Wichita State. By doing so, he became the only member of the 2012 Rivals.com top 150 class to commit to a Missouri Valley Conference school.
