Ewan McGregor was born on March 31, 1971, in Perth, Scotland, and grew up in nearby Crieff. His mother, Carol Diane (née Lawson), is a retired teacher who served as the deputy head teacher at Kingspark School in Dundee, while his father, James Charles Stewart “Jim” McGregor, is a retired physical education teacher and former careers master at Morrison’s Academy in Crieff. McGregor has an older brother, Colin, born in 1969, who previously served as a Tornado GR4 pilot in the Royal Air Force. His uncle is actor Denis Lawson, and his aunt by marriage was actress Sheila Gish, making McGregor a step-cousin to Gish’s actress daughters, Kay Curram and Lou Gish.
In September 2020, McGregor shared during his motorcycle documentary Long Way Up that one of his great-grandfathers, John “Juan” Charles McIndoe, was born in Chile to Scottish parents. His father was involved in railway construction in Chile in the late 19th century before McIndoe moved to Glasgow, where he became a wine importer and diplomat. McGregor attended Morrison’s Academy for his schooling and, after leaving at age 16, worked as a stagehand at Perth Theatre. He then completed a foundation course in drama at Kirkcaldy College of Technology before studying drama at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London at 18.
