Of Irish descent, Erin Doherty hails from Crawley in West Sussex. Her paternal grandfather originated from Carndonagh, a town located in Inishowen in the north of County Donegal, Ulster. Following her parents’ divorce when she was four years old, she began attending Sunday drama classes alongside her older sister, Grace. Doherty attended Hazelwick School in Crawley. She was also a gifted footballer, playing as a midfielder and captaining the Crawley Wasps. was even scouted by Chelsea Women’s Football Club but ultimately decided to pursue acting over a professional football career.
She began her formal training with a one-year course at the Guildford School of Acting (2011–12), followed by three years at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School (2012–15). During her time there, she won the prestigious Stephen Sondheim Society Student Performer of the Year Award in 2015, impressing with her performance of “Broadway Baby” from the Sondheim musical Follies.
