Early Life and Education

Born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, to British Jewish parents, Maitlis has a family history that includes a paternal grandmother who was a Jewish refugee from Nazi Germany. Her father, Professor Peter Maitlis FRS, is an Emeritus Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Sheffield, while her mother, Marion Basco, is a psychotherapist from Cambridge.

Her mother studied French and Spanish at St Hugh’s College, Oxford, and later taught French at Cambridgeshire High School for Girls. Maitlis grew up on Park Avenue in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, alongside her two older sisters, Nicky and Sally. She attended King Edward VII School in Sheffield and went on to study English at Queens’ College, Cambridge, where she participated in the Marlowe Society, acting in productions such as Doctor Faustus, directed by Clare Venables. She graduated with a 2.1 degree.
