Dustin Hoffman Latest News
Dustin Hoffman is mourning the loss of his Tootsie co-star, Teri Garr, who passed away at the age of 79 after a prolonged battle with multiple sclerosis. In a statement to The Post on October 29, 2024, Hoffman, 87, praised Garr’s talent and character: “Teri was brilliant and singular in all she did, and had a heart of gold. Working with her was one of the great highs. There was no one like her.” Garr played Sandy Lester, Hoffman’s friend and occasional love interest, in the 1982 classic Tootsie, a role that earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
Garr had expressed in her 2005 memoir, Speedbumps: Flooring it Through Hollywood, her pride over the Oscar nomination: “I was proud. The academy not only knew I existed, they thought I was good!” Despite initial hesitation about accepting the supporting role in Tootsie, having recently played a lead in One From the Heart, Garr was convinced by director Sydney Pollack to join the cast. She appreciated the creative freedom she was given to develop the character, with Pollack allowing her to contribute ideas for Sandy Lester’s role. Garr also recalled how Hoffman was supportive, encouraging her to share her ideas with Pollack: “Dustin had beaten [Sydney] into submission, so he’d say, ‘If you have an idea, tell Sydney,’” she remembered.
