Early life

The eldest child of Kosovo Albanian parents Anesa (née Rexha) and Dukagjin Lipa from Pristina, FR Yugoslavia (modern-day Kosovo), Lipa was born in London. Her grandma on her mother’s side is Bosniak. Lipa’s lineage originates in the Kosovo city of Peja. Her grandfathers were historians, both of them. She has a brother named Gjin and a sister named Rina. Lipa’s father, the lead vocalist and guitarist for the Kosovan rock group Oda, had a profound musical influence on her. At home, her father kept playing music—both original pieces and tunes by musicians like David Bowie, Bob Dylan, Radiohead, Sting, the Police, and Stereophonics. At the young age of five, Dua Lipa started to sing.

Lipa was raised in London’s West Hampstead. She studied music at Fitzjohn’s Primary School, where she took cello lessons. The teacher told her that “she could not sing” when she tried out for the school chorus. She started taking singing classes at the Sylvia Young Theatre School on weekends when she was nine years old. In 2008, Lipa’s family relocated to Pristina following Kosovo’s declaration of independence. She thought about pursuing a career in music while attending Mileniumi i Tretë School and learning more about the Albanian language. When Lipa was fifteen, she moved back to London by herself and cohabitated with a family acquaintance. She completed her A-Levels at Parliament Hill School before making a part-time return to Sylvia Young Theatre School. She posted her own music to YouTube and SoundCloud.

While working as a waiter in a cocktail bar in 2013, Lipa signed a contract with Tap Management, which was led by Ed Millett and Ben Mawson. Mawson was introduced to Lipa by her attorney, who dissuaded her from accepting an additional publishing agreement that was made available to her. They then made her a monthly compensation offer to quit her work and concentrate on making music recordings. Lipa co-wrote the song “Hotter than Hell” during one of the sessions, which helped her land a record contract with Warner Bros. Records in 2014. In retrospect, Millett explained, “Dua was really astute—part of the reason she signed with Warner Bros. was that they needed a major female pop artist because they didn’t have one.” She was the team’s main focus since they genuinely wanted her.

Emile Haynie and Andrew Wyatt produced Lipa’s debut single, “New Love,” which was released in August 2015. In October 2015, her second song, “Be the One,” was released to great success around Europe, peaking at number one in Belgium, Poland, and Slovakia and ranking in the top ten across more than eleven European countries. The song became popular in Australia and New Zealand, receiving airplay and peaking at number six and twenty, respectively. She was made public as one of the performers on the BBC Sound of… 2016 long list in November 2015.

Artistry and influences

Her songs fall under the dance-pop, synth-pop, R&B, dream pop, alternative pop, and nu-disco subgenres stylistically. She characterizes “dark pop” as her musical genre. She is also renowned for her “sultry” tone and “distinct, husky, low register” singing. Fans sometimes refer to her as “Dula Peep,” a nickname that was coined in 2018 by American talk show personality Wendy Williams as a mispronunciation. She has now accepted the moniker wholeheartedly.
