Early life

The eldest child of Kosovo Albanian parents Anesa (née Rexha) and Dukagjin Lipa from Pristina, FR Yugoslavia (modern-day Kosovo), Lipa was born in London. Her grandma on her mother’s side is Bosniak. Lipa’s lineage originates in the Kosovo city of Peja. Her grandfathers were historians, both of them. She has a brother named Gjin and a sister named Rina. Lipa’s father, the lead vocalist and guitarist for the Kosovan rock group Oda, had a profound musical influence on her. At home, her father kept playing music—both original pieces and tunes by musicians like David Bowie, Bob Dylan, Radiohead, Sting, the Police, and Stereophonics. At the young age of five, Dua Lipa started to sing.

Lipa was raised in London’s West Hampstead. She studied music at Fitzjohn’s Primary School, where she took cello lessons.
