Creation and development
Marvel’s Silver Age character Doom was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby during the successful run of the Fantastic Four series. The character’s name, Doctor Doom, was chosen by Lee for its simplicity and implied threat. It wasn’t until two years after his introduction that Doctor Doom received a full origin story in Fantastic Four Annual #2. Jack Kirby described Doctor Doom’s design as representing the concept of approaching death, with the character symbolizing a figure like The Man in the Iron Mask, devoid of mercy and humanity.
