Early life
Deepika Kumari was born in Ranchi, Bihar (now Jharkhand) to Shiv Charan Prajapati, an auto-rickshaw driver, and Geeta, a nurse at Ranchi Medical College, and a native of Ratu Chatti village, located 15 km from Ranchi. She comes from the Prajapati family. As a child, she honed her skills by aiming for mangoes with stones. Despite financial challenges, her parents supported her dream by making sacrifices to provide her with necessary training equipment, leading Deepika to practice archery using handmade bamboo bows and arrows. Deepika received guidance from her cousin Vidya Kumari, an archer at Tata Archery Academy, to nurture her talent.
Career
Deepika’s initial breakthrough came in 2005 when she enrolled in the Arjun Archery Academy in Kharsawan, established by Meera Munda, the spouse of Jharkhand’s chief minister Arjun Munda. However, her professional archery career commenced in 2006 upon joining the Tata Archery Academy in Jamshedpur. It was at this academy where she commenced her training with appropriate gear and uniform, along with a stipend of Rs 500. Deepika visited home for the first time after three years, following her victory in the Cadet World Championship in November 2009. Kumari has long been viewed as the individual who would secure India’s first archery medal.
