He is the son of Peter Willey, a former England cricketer and international umpire. Willey was part of the England team that emerged victorious in the 2022 T20 World Cup. He announced his retirement from international cricket on 1 November 2023, post the 2023 Cricket World Cup. Willey commenced his career with Northamptonshire in the County Championship division two, making his debut at the age of 19 in the 2009 season.
