David Vincent Leslie Ames, born on 25 June 1989, is a field hockey player from Northern Ireland. He serves as a defender or midfielder for Old Georgians, as well as for the England and Great Britain national teams. Ames competed for Great Britain in the 2016 Summer Olympics and contributed to England’s bronze medal win at the 2017 Men’s EuroHockey Nations Championship. Additionally, he represented England in the 2018 Men’s Hockey World Cup.

Who is David Ames?
David Ames, a veteran from Great Britain, will participate in his third Olympics in Paris 2025. Raised in Cookstown, Northern Ireland, his initial passion was football, but he gave up on pursuing a professional career in the sport because of his size concerns.

Early Life
Ames was a student at Cookstown High School from 2001 to 2009. During 2007-2009, he led the school team to victory in the All Ireland Schoolboys Hockey Championship and secured two consecutive Burney Cup/McCullough Cup titles. In the 2007-08 Burney Cup final, David Ames scored four goals to help Cookstown High beat the Royal and Prior School of Raphoe 6-3 in extra time. During the 2008-09 McCullough Cup final, David Ames scored two goals as Cookstown High defeated Sullivan Upper School 3-0. Ames also scored the first goal in the 2008-09 Burney Cup final, where Cookstown High triumphed over Banbridge Academy 4-3.
Carrer
Between 2008 and 2012, Ames played in 64 senior international matches for Ireland. During this time, he contributed to Ireland’s victory in the 2011 Men’s Hockey Champions Challenge II and also participated in various other significant events such as the 2009 Men’s Hockey World Cup Qualifiers, the 2011 Men’s EuroHockey Nations Championship, and the 2012 Men’s Field Hockey Olympic Qualifier. In April 2012, Ames played his final game for Ireland, where he helped secure a 2–1 victory against Germany alongside Ian Sloan. Subsequently, in January 2013, both Ames and Sloan announced their decision to switch their allegiances from Ireland to England/Great Britain to compete in the Olympic Games.
Coach
Ames has experience both playing the game and working as a field hockey coach. He coached at Repton School from 2010 to 2011, led the Nottingham Trent University first team during the 2011–12 season, and served as a junior coach at Beeston from 2011 to 2017. Additionally, he coached the University of Nottingham first team from 2012 to 2015 and guided them to an intervarsity title in 2015. Since 2012, he has been with MT13, a field hockey coaching company, and since 2013, he has worked as a field hockey development officer at Rugby School.
