Cynthia Erivo was born on January 8, 1987, to Nigerian immigrant parents in Stockwell, South London. Her parents separated when she was young; her mother, Edith, worked as a nurse and was just 15 when the Nigerian Civil War began. Erivo has one sister, Nicolette. She attended La Retraite Roman Catholic Girls’ School in Clapham Park. As a child, she performed in Brecht’s Caucasian Chalk Circle and later appeared on television in Trust Me, I’m a Teenager. In 2004, Erivo began studying music psychology at the University of East London, but after a year, she applied to and was accepted at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, where she trained in acting and graduated in 2010.
