Early Life
Williams grew up in Folkston, Georgia, a small town with a population of under 5,000. As a child, she would often sleep with a basketball and dreamed of playing in the WNBA. Her father noted that she was never interested in dolls; instead, she preferred jumping on dirt bikes and riding four-wheelers, often playing basketball with the boys in her neighborhood.
High School Career
At Charlton County High School, Williams played for the Indians, following in the footsteps of her mother, Michelle Williams (née Granger), who had also played there 22 years earlier. Michelle set a single-game scoring record by scoring 40 points, a record that Courtney surpassed during her junior season with 42 points, and later broke again with 44 points. Williams credits her father, Donald, for pushing her athletically and encouraging her to develop her midrange shot due to her smaller size.
During her sophomore year, her father forbade her from playing high school basketball as punishment for sneaking out to see someone he disapproved of, but her mother allowed her to continue participating in AAU basketball that year. In her senior year, Williams led her team to the state semifinals, scoring 47 points in the quarterfinals. She earned a spot on the first team for all-state in Georgia but was surprisingly left off the senior all-star game roster.
