Early life and Education
Colman Domingo was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as the third of four children in a working-class family. His mother, Edith Bowles, was a homemaker and also worked at a bank, while his stepfather, Clarence, earned a living sanding floors. Sadly, Edith passed away in 2006, just one day after Domingo’s audition for the musical Passing Strange. His stepfather had passed away earlier that year. Domingo’s biological father was from Belize, with roots in Guatemala, but he had left the family when Domingo was just nine years old. As a child, Domingo had a speech impediment and a lisp, which led his mother to send him to speech therapy.
He graduated from Overbrook High School in 1987 and later attended Temple University, where he majored in journalism. After finishing his studies, he moved to San Francisco to pursue acting, focusing mainly on theatre productions. Domingo has also shared his knowledge by teaching and giving lectures at various institutions, including the University of Texas at Austin in 2014, the O’Neill National Theater Institute in 2015, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2016.
